A unique gene expression signature in visceral adipose tissue identifies a high blood pressure group in patients with Cushing’s syndrome

The Bruno Allolio-Preis honors outstanding original scientific work in the field of rare endocrine diseases. This year Frederick Vogel and Ulrich Stiefel won the price with their manuscript.

This study is the first to describe a diverse range of effects caused by cortisol excess in adipose tissue, including the correlation of adipose tissue gene expression and systemic blood pressure in patients with endogenous Cushing’s syndrome. It was found that genes from the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system are highly regulated locally in adipose tissue during active Cushing’s syndrome and may therefore influence blood pressure. Renin was one of the strongest regulated genes and correlated significantly with systemic blood pressure in these patients.
